The Practice
Anastasia Shi is an international contemporary artist based in Mexico City whose practice moves across painting, ceramics, objects and performance. Her work examines how emotion is carried through the body—and how memory, identity and vulnerability can be transformed through material, gesture and ritual.
Moving between abstraction, symbolism and fragmented figuration, Shi creates visual fields in which the human form is sensed rather than fully resolved. Bodies, faces and organic shapes emerge, dissolve and return as carriers of psychological and emotional truth. Fragmentation is not presented as rupture alone; it becomes a method of rebuilding, allowing contradictory experiences to coexist.
Embodiment is central to the practice. Paint, clay, paper and found material retain pressure, rhythm and touch. Repeated actions become private rituals through which inherited narratives and internal limitations can be examined. Across the work, vulnerability is treated as an active force: a place from which identity may be reconsidered and transformation can begin.
The resulting works resist fixed interpretation. They invite slower looking and an encounter with what is intuitive, symbolic and emotionally unresolved.
