The project
Home as an internal state
During Art Week Mexico 2026, contemporary artist Anastasia Shi created Home Within for Samsonite’s NUON artistic intervention at BADA México. The project invited artists to transform pieces of luggage into three-dimensional works, bringing contemporary art into dialogue with movement, travel and design.
Shi’s intervention considers home not as a fixed geographical place, but as an internal state carried across borders. Layered faces and interlocking fields of colour move across the suitcase as fragments of memory, identity and emotional experience—forming a portable inner landscape.
Developed within Shi’s broader practice around migration, embodiment and transformation, Home Within turns an object associated with departure into a vessel for belonging. The work asks what remains with us when location changes, and how identity can be carried, rebuilt and reimagined through movement.
